Enneagram Type 4, known as The Creative or The Individualist, is introspective, emotionally rich, and deeply attuned to beauty and meaning. Fours are driven by a desire to understand their identity and express their uniqueness, often feeling a sense of longing or that something essential is missing. They value authenticity and depth, and they seek emotional connection and creative expression in all areas of life. At their best, Fours are empathetic, creative, and emotionally honest; at their worst, they can become moody, self-absorbed, or envy others who seem to have what they lack. Their core fear is being flawed or insignificant, and their core desire is to be seen and loved for who they truly are.

TYPE 4 IN A RELATIONSHIP

Emotionally attuned and deeply romantic partners who seek authenticity and soulful connection. They bring depth, creativity, and a willingness to explore the full range of emotions with their partner. They can have an adventurous side, wanting to explore the awe and beauty of the world with their life partner and are not afraid to examine the darker side of emotions. They seek to be understood by their partners and it can be disappointing for an Enneagram 4 if their partner struggles to get to the heart of matters. They will sometimes withdraw if they feel misunderstood or unseen.

ENNEAGRAM 4: The Creative

AT YOUR DESK

Plants, mementos, love letters, dried flowers, prayer beads. Anything that sets you apart from the minimalist in the cubicle next to you.

You can be so focused on not being ordinary that you can miss the simple things in life. Enneagram 4s can spend time brooding over what they don’t have, with a belief that everyone else’s a life is so easy. 4s can get stuck in an emotional well, drowing in their own feelings and negative self talk, struggling to come up for air. They trend to rebel against tradition or authority but sometimes that can lead them down a dark path, the resistance limiting them from reaching their potential both in realtionships and career.

The work for the Enneagram Type 4 is to learn how to embrace the ordinary. Not every action, career choice or relationship has to be steeped in meaning. Bringing levity and joy into everyday activities will help you access a more balanced approach to life. As you tend to lead with your heart and internalize your feelings, logic can get left in the dust. Try unlocking your roadblocks through the lens of objectivity, removing emotions from the equation. Work on adding structure to your calender and make time for fun and socializing. You can be a great humanitarian and pianist and still hit up Shake Shack for a burger once in a while.

Type 4 at Work…

Type 4s lead through authenticity. As creative types, they must have access to some kind of creative outlet at work or at home. They tend to be drawn to careers in music, art or design but also excel in philanthropic roles as well. Enneagram 4s must have meaning in their work, but it can go beyond creativity. Empowering a team, developing a vaccine, public policy work, there are many fields in which the 4 can thrive. In a team dynamic they bring innovation and new ways of looking at old problems.
