Actualizing Your Goals. 5 Steps to Success

Are you pursuing new avenues this year? Have you set new goals for yourself? Or maybe old goals that are now new goals but truthfully you really don’t know how you are going to achieve them beyond wishful thinking?

Here are five steps to make this the most goal achievable year ever!

Step 1:

Size matters. Small steps lead to great things. Instead of setting massive goals for the whole year, break your goals up into a series of mini goals building on top of one another. Also consider breaking the year up into quarters. It’s like a fiscal calendar of your best self. And why not set a theme for the quarters? Q1 can be heart health and engagement, Q2 restoration and creativity, etc.

Step 2:

Ask yourself what matters most to you about this goal? GET CLEAR AND DIG DEEP. Keep writing until you get to the essence of what is really important. Trust me, it’s usually not the first thing that pops into your mind!

Step 3:

Obstacles. Both real and imagined. What will likely get in the way? What is the story you are telling yourself about achieving this goal? What are your blind spots? I could do it if I had more time? More money? Younger? Whatever it is, try to be as honest as possible. If you aren’t sure, ask a friend and brainstorm all that is getting in your way and then find the truth in those obstacles.

Step 4:

Visualize your life as if you have achieved that goal. What is your life like? How does it feel? What’s different? Embody this persona, sink into it. See yourself cashing that paycheck, running that fifth mile, learning a new skill. Feel yourself lighter, more engaged, more forgiving.

Step 5:

Exposure and accountability. Greatness can only be achieved through vulnerability. Say your goal out loud AND ask for help. There is no reason to do it alone! Set a deadline and ask someone to hold you to it. Or hire a coach, it is what we do!

Feedback always welcome.

Happy 2020!
