A Quick Guide to Setting an Intention that Works

Setting an intention. That phrase has become ingrained in our culture. Maybe in your yoga class, during a meditation, or you use it when you write in your planner or journal. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, inhale, and set an intention for the day.

Uh, ok. Hmmm… But how does it work? Can I simply say the words out loud and they become true? What does setting a well-intended intention look like? Read on to find out, and let’s dive into some examples!

Based on the current climate I would gather your intentions looked something like:

  • Be more patient.

  • Be more active.

  • Be more present.

By putting these statements into the universe did you suddenly become more patient, active, or present? I am guessing no. So what is missing in the above intentions? A plan! You must attach a plan to your intention to solidify it and put it into play. Let’s circle back to the above list and add some action items.

  • Be more patient by noticing triggers that cause my impatience and by adopting a new breathing technique. This will give me more time to process my words before they leave my body.

  • Be more active by creating opportunities in my week where I can get outside and find an accountability partner who likes 7:00 pm walks as much as I do.

  • Be more present by adding a 5-minute meditation into my morning calendar and practice awareness by holding eye contact with the people I love.

Try it and let me know how it goes! Feedback always encouraged.

Want to get even more intentional with your week? My latest workshop, Morning Cup of Clarity, could be just what you need. Starting on Monday, August 10, I will be hosting a 4-week long series with Marin based marketer and founder of Cuppa Culture, Sophie Davies, to help you get clear on how to prioritize your schedule, carve out creative time, and set new weekly habits. Walk away feeling connected and clear, all in the time it takes to drink your morning cuppa.
