How to Beat Procrastination Using your Enneagram Type
It is almost the end of March and how do you feel? Satisfied? Excited ? Proud? OR overwhelmed, angst ridden and hiding under the covers and unsure how to proceed with your next move?
My guess is you feel a combination of all of those things and possibly the last one is dominating your headspace. Between being the yes person for your work, relationships or community AND trying to absorb (or deny) the economic shutdown, a weak job market and various global crises, it can be hard to work on yourself and move forward if you can't see the light. As a leadership coach, I can help.
Tapping into your Enneagram type can help. If you have been following along on my Enneagram Journey via Instagram, you may already know your Enneagram number but if not, please head here for a free version of the assessment or book a consult here with me to learn about Enneagram coaching for individuals, couples or teams.
If motivation can be defined as “the reason one is behaving or acting in a particular way” (Oxford Dictionary) then the Enneagram is the WHY behind the reason you act a certain way.
If you are seeking a bit of clarity, go ahead and take a moment and think about what is holding you back from getting into action and how it relates to your current situation. These can be career, personal or entrepreneurial goals. If you are struggling to beat procrastination and achieve goals for the day, week or even Q2 let's check in with your Enneagram and examine by type.
Enneagram 1- Strict Perfectionist
Motivation: to do the right thing. How is this getting in the way of your success? Does everything need to be “right” before you can proceed?
Enneagram 2- Considerate Helper
Motivation: to be liked and appreciated. How is this getting in the way of your big picture dreams? Where do you need to set boundaries and be okay with not being liked by all?
Enneagram 3: Competitive Achiever
Motivation: to be successful and outshine the best. Take a moment to uncover your why behind your actions. As you climb to the top are you fulfilling your heart's desires? What do you long for?
Enneagram 4: The Intense Creative
Motivation: To be unique and authentic. How is your desire to be different stopping you from achieving success? How can you bring levity to your day and experiment with being “normal”?
Enneagram 5: The Quiet Specialist
Motivation: Have to understand. You feel secure when you know what is happening and when you have all of the data. Your work is to bring levity and emotions into the picture. What if you don't have all the answers but proceed anyway?
Enneagram 6: The Loyal Skeptic
Motivation: To Be safe and Belong. You are a planner and examine everything from all angles. Pushing past your fear of “what if” and committing to your values and choices will help launch you into action.
Enneagram 7: The Enthusiastic Visionary
Motivation: To experience it all and avoid pain. In order to reach your goals you must sit in the discomfort, whether it is taking time to refuel in solitude, or create an action plan to break down strategy, you must map out the steps it takes to meet your goals before jumping to the outcome. (I'm a 7….ugh!)
Enneagram 8: Active Controller
Motivation: To be in control and be strong. Often the hardest part for an 8 is self care. Motivation is NOT the problem. What ways do you need to tap into your health and creativity and make that your goal, not the bottom line? Enjoying the journey and not the destination can be a marker for success.
Enneagram 9: Adaptive Peacemaker
Motivation: Keep the balance. Setting goals can be challenging if you tend to let other people speak up first or take center stage. As uncomfortable as it is, you must embrace your own desires and self importance in order to build momentum and overcome your blocks so you can get into action.
YOUR NUMBER ONE MISSION THIS MONTH IS TO MOVE PAST YOUR BLOCKS AND SHOW A NEW SIDE OF YOURSELF.
RUN MICRO EXPERIMENTS AND SEE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO PLAY A DIFFERENT ROLE AND MIX UP THOSE BEHAVIORS THAT MAY BE HOLDING YOU BACK.
